Series of bad decisions in my life.
The one where I screwed up working with the ministry of foreign country.
I indeed have gained mastery in making bad decisions of my life. What better way to feel good about it than laughing over it by letting few more friends and strangers judge you on the same. Presenting my first ever excerpt from ‘ Series of bad decisions in my life feat. Simply Saloni’
Considering my previous medium post,
“My first design internship experience” by Saloni Mhapsekar https://link.medium.com/SXinnDBBk1
I can pretty much laugh over the irony of the situation. But hey, let’s be honest. What even is fun of driving in Mumbai if you don’t come across the potholes? What even is point of robbery if there are no risks? ( Yes even I can’t stop binge watching Money Heist )
Hence I took a risk. Rather a gamble which involved me completing a catalogue design of 50 pages in a day. Yes, I repeat WITHIN A DAY.
Here are few thoughts which I revisited while completing the project in middle of night.
01. Why did I say Yes at first place.
In your freelancing career, opportunities shall tempt you. You feel if you lose this then what? With you been the only sculptor of your life, also an amateur designer you tend to say YES to many projects. Then you realise this is not your cup of tea. And regret ordering the dish-with-fancy-name-didn’t-fulfil-expectation at the first place.
Learning — Henceforth, choose projects wisely. Consider all the aspects. People tend to take freelancers granted considering they can work at any godly hour. Will you like doing this project if someone wakes you at middle of night? Will this help in your development?
This no way discourages your honesty. If you can’t do certain task state it upfront. This would probably be the only right thing I did but, realized much later. You are not suppose to know everything. Clients, do understand. Frame it well.
O2. How did I really end up here?
Well, a quick brief. My trustworthy pal, my dearest Surface pro gave up on me. The screen flickering made things difficult to work on. But if you see this is just another excuse. Reality is I had no backup. Thus I couldn’t answer the question 'How is this their problem?’
Learning — We live in society where we can hardly trust people, relying on our electronics during projects is certainly not helping. No jugaad in the world can save you then. Have back up plans. ALWAYS !
O3. Where does the real problem lie?
The real problem lies where I overestimated my capabilities. Where I refused to take a break. Where I didn’t really ask for help. Where I wasn’t patient enough. Where I could have dealt with the problem in better way at the first place.
After immense overthinking in middle of project I decided to do something which I should’ve way before.
Learning — Sleep over it. The solution was simple. With refreshed mind and clearer vision I managed to finish it off. Not exactly according to the timeline. But I did. The project wasn’t the end of the world indeed!
That one job which is sucking life out of you or that one problem which seems impossible to solve has only one solution. And I don’t know it either. You do. But before that KitKat break banta hai!
In the end of the project what really mattered was, I could complete the project. Complete the daunting yet challenging task. With all the breakdowns and drama I managed to cross the finish line.
This surely won’t be a project I would like to brag about in my portfolio. But this surely, is the project which will help me decide in a better way ahead. That’s the beauty of bad decisions I feel, how much you hate making them, they are responsible in shaping you how you have turned today. So let’s recall and celebrate all of our bad decisions for a change.
